7 Tips to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot

Tips for a relaxed newborn photoshoot, with a focus on natural moments, family connection and capturing those fleeting first weeks.

Those first few weeks with a new baby can feel like a beautiful blur of sleepy cuddles, endless feeds, nappy changes and finding your new rhythm together. A newborn photoshoot is a chance to pause and capture some of those fleeting moments before they change.

If you're preparing for your newborn session, here are a few simple things to keep in mind to help you feel relaxed and enjoy the experience.

1. Don't worry if your baby isn't settled

Newborns don't always follow a schedule and that's completely normal. Your baby may cry, need a feed, want to be cuddled or require a few nappy changes during your session.

There's no need to arrive with a perfectly sleepy or settled baby. Your session should work around your baby, not the other way around. If your little one needs some extra cuddles or a few moments to settle, that's all part of the experience.

2. A full tummy can help

If possible, feeding your baby shortly before your session can help them feel comfortable and content. However, don't worry if they need another feed once the session is underway.

Newborn sessions naturally include pauses for feeding, burping, cuddling and settling. There's no need to rush through these moments (your baby comes first).

3. Choose outfits that feel comfortable and timeless

When deciding what to wear, think about comfort and simplicity. Soft, neutral colours and timeless pieces tend to photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family and the connection between you.

Try to avoid large logos or very busy patterns, and choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident. The most important thing is that you still feel like yourself.

If you're unsure about what to wear, don't be afraid to ask your photographer for guidance before your session.

4. Don't stress about having a perfect home

If you're having your newborn photos taken at home, it's easy to feel like you need to clean and organise every room beforehand. You don't.

You don't need a perfectly styled nursery or a spotless house. The focus will be on your family, using the space sand natural light that work best for your photographs.

A quick tidy of the areas you think you'd like to use is more than enough. Your home is part of your family's story, too. There's beauty in capturing your life as it really is.

5. Give yourself plenty of time

Newborn sessions can take a little longer than you might expect, so give yourself plenty of breathing room around your appointment.

Allow extra time for getting ready, travelling, feeding and settling your baby. Once your session begins, there's no need to watch the clock. Slowing down and allowing things to unfold naturally often creates the most beautiful and meaningful moments.

6. Remember that everyone is part of the story

Your newborn may be the newest member of your family, but they're not the only part of the story.

Think about including parents, siblings and even your pets in some of the photographs. The little interactions between family members - a sibling holding the baby's hand, a parent comforting them or everyone gathering together for a cuddle - can become some of the most treasured images from your session.

Don't worry if your older children aren't perfectly behaved. They don't need to be. Their personalities and the way they naturally interact with their new sibling are part of your family's story.

7. Don't overlook the everyday moments

When you think about newborn photographs, you might imagine posed portraits of a sleeping baby. While those images can be beautiful, some of the most treasured photographs are often the simplest ones.

A feed in the nursery. A tiny hand wrapped around a parent's finger. A sleepy yawn. The way your baby fits perfectly into your arms. A sibling gently touching their head. The details of their tiny toes and fingers.

These moments may feel completely ordinary now, but they're also the moments that change the fastest. One day, you'll look back and realise just how quickly this season passed.

Those small details will become the things you remember most.

The most important thing to remember?

You don't need a perfectly sleepy baby, a spotless home or perfectly behaved siblings to have beautiful newborn photographs.

You simply need to be present with your family.

The rest can be taken care of.
