Jungle Juice Recipe

Jungle Juice is a simple drink many moms use to stay hydrated while breastfeeding and recovering after birth. It combines fluids, electrolytes, and optional herbal tonics for extra support.

Jungle Juice has become a bit of a cult favourite among new moms online. Despite the playful name, it’s simply a hydrating (and yummy) drink designed to support breastfeeding and postpartum recovery. Packed with electrolytes, fluids, and a little flavour, I swear by it for helping stay hydrated while breastfeeding. I’ve put my hubby in charge of making it and it’s something he makes for both of us to enjoy in the postpartum period. Giving your partner important tasks to take full ownership of related to birth preparation and postpartum recovery can help empower and involve them in meaningful ways.

For a breastfeeding mom, hydration is everything. Breast milk is mostly water, and when you’re feeding frequently (especially in those early weeks) it’s easy to forget to drink enough. A big jug of something refreshing within reach can make all the difference.

The beauty of Jungle Juice is that it’s easy to keep in the fridge so you can pour a glass whenever you need it. I add lots of ice into my Stanley and enjoy it over a few hours.

Why Moms Love It

Many moms find Jungle Juice helpful because it combines several things the body needs postpartum:

Electrolytes

Electrolytes help the body absorb fluids more effectively than water alone. This can be particularly helpful if you’re breastfeeding, sweating through hormonal changes, or recovering from birth.

Hydration without boredom

Drinking plain water all day can feel monotonous. A lightly flavoured drink can encourage you to drink more consistently.

Easy to keep nearby

When you’re trapped under a feeding baby or settling into a contact nap, having a jug of Jungle Juice in the fridge makes it easy for your partner or support person to pour you a glass.

Rescue Remedy Drops

Adding a few drops of Rescue Remedy (often called Rescue Drops) to your Jungle Juice can offer gentle emotional support during the intense early days of postpartum. This well-known flower essence blend is traditionally used to help ease feelings of stress, overwhelm, and emotional pressure. Many moms like adding it to their drink as a small daily ritual of care - something that supports a sense of calm while navigating feeding schedules, sleep deprivation, and the many adjustments that come with a new baby.

Why Many Moms Add Schlehén Elixir to Jungle Juice

One ingredient you’ll often see added to Jungle Juice in many South African mom circles is Vitaforce Schlehén Elixir. This herbal tonic has been used for generations as a gentle energy and vitality booster, particularly during times when the body is under strain or recovering.

The elixir is traditionally used to help support the body when you are feeling run down, exhausted, or depleted - something many new moms can certainly relate to in the postpartum season. It’s commonly recommended as a restorative tonic during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and during periods of recovery after illness or surgery.

For breastfeeding mothers, one of the reasons it’s often included in Jungle Juice is that it is believed to help support lactation while also helping to restore energy and vitality. The early weeks with a newborn can be physically demanding, and many moms appreciate having something that both hydrates and gently supports the body while it adjusts.

Adding Schlehén Elixir to Jungle Juice is therefore less about the flavour (although it is yummy!) and more about enhancing the drink as a nourishing postpartum tonic - combining hydration, electrolytes, and a traditional vitality booster in one easy drink.

As always, it’s a good idea for moms to check with their doctor, midwife, or lactation consultant before introducing any supplements, especially during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

A Gentle Note

Like many things in motherhood, Jungle Juice isn’t a magic solution for milk supply. Milk production is primarily driven by frequent feeding, effective latch, and overall maternal health. But staying well hydrated certainly supports your body while it does this incredible work. Some say the

Think of it less as a miracle drink and more as a small act of care for yourself during a season when your body is giving so much.

A Raising & Rising Tip

If you’re preparing for postpartum, you could even make a jug of Jungle Juice before baby arrives and keep the ingredients stocked in your fridge. It’s one of those little comforts that makes those early feeding days just a bit easier.

And if a friend is visiting a new mom, consider bringing the ingredients along instead of flowers. A fresh jug in the fridge might be exactly what she needs.
