Packing a Postpartum Care Basket/Caddy for Your Bathroom

A postpartum bathroom basket keeps essentials like pads, breast pads, and comfortable underwear within reach, making the first weeks after birth simpler, more comfortable, and less overwhelming.

The postpartum period is one of the most physically intense seasons a woman will ever move through - and yet it’s often the least prepared for. While so much focus goes into the baby’s needs, your body is quietly doing the hard work of healing. A simple postpartum care basket in your bathroom can make a world of difference during those early days and weeks.

This isn’t about perfection or excess. It’s about reducing friction when you’re sore, tired, bleeding, leaking, hormonal, and learning how to exist in a brand-new body. Having everything you need within arm’s reach turns each bathroom visit from something daunting into something manageable - even comforting.

Why a Bathroom Basket Matters

In the first few weeks after birth, you’ll likely be visiting the bathroom often. Standing, bending, opening cupboards, or realising you’ve forgotten something can feel exhausting. A dedicated basket means no scrambling, no stress, and fewer moments of feeling overwhelmed.

Think of this basket as practical self-care - quiet, unglamorous, and deeply necessary.

What to Put in Your Postpartum Bathroom Basket

Maternity Pads (Heavy-Duty & Reliable)

Postpartum bleeding (lochia) is heavier than a normal period, especially in the early days. Having proper maternity pads ready makes a huge difference to comfort and confidence.

  • Lil-Lets Maternity Pads – dependable and absorbent for the early postpartum days
  • Carriwell Maternity Pads – soft, supportive, and designed specifically for postpartum recovery

Keep a generous stack in your basket so you’re never caught short. I like to layer these on the heavier days – I stick the Lil-Lets pad into my underwear and then rest a Carriwell one on top, then change out the Carriwell one more often.

Breast Pads (Reusable & Disposable)

Whether you’re breastfeeding, pumping, combo-feeding, or still waiting for your milk to come in, leaking is common and unpredictable.

  • Little Weasel Reusable Breast Pads – gentle on sensitive skin and ideal for longer stretches at home
  • Lansinoh Disposable Breast Pads – perfect for overnight use or outings when convenience matters. These are my favourite but there are tons of great brands (Pigeon, even Clicks)

Having both options gives you flexibility depending on the day (or night).

Stretchy, Forgiving Underwear

Your postpartum body needs space - physically and emotionally. Tight or “pretty” underwear can wait.

  • Stretchy undies two sizes up from Pick n Pay Clothing – affordable, soft, and practical - these work well with maternity pads and give room for swelling and tenderness
  • If you prefer, Carriwell Disposable Undies / Hospital Panties – breathable, secure, and ideal in the first week or two

Comfort always comes before aesthetics in this season.

Supportive, Comfortable Bras

Your breasts will change size frequently in the early weeks, sometimes even within the same day. Comfort and flexibility are key.

  • Criss Cross Maternity Bras – supportive without digging in
    • I got mine from Amazon (UK) but you can also find them locally at Momsy or similar styles on Takealot

Keep one or two clean bras folded in your basket for easy changes.

Disposable & Protective Bottom Layers

Some days you’ll want maximum protection with minimal effort, especially overnight or during heavier bleeding in the days directly following your birth.

  • TENA Lady Pants – excellent for night-time or high-flow days, I would say these are the luxury version of adult nappies
  • Sage Sanitary Care – got these from Checkers as a lower cost option (TENA Lady Pants are quite pricey) and I really liked them

These are especially helpful when bending and changing pads feels like too much.

Bed & Surface Protection

Leaks happen and that’s normal.

  • Softi Linen Savers – place them on your bed, couch, or wherever you’re resting - they provide peace of mind and save you unnecessary laundry in an already demanding season

Keeping a few folded in your bathroom basket makes them easy to grab when needed.

A Gentle Reminder

Your postpartum care basket doesn’t need to look a certain way or include everything at once. Start with the basics. Add as you go. Replace what runs out. What matters most is that you’re making space for your own recovery and giving yourself options to optimize your comfort.§

This basket is a quiet message to yourself:
I am allowed to heal slowly. I am allowed to be comfortable. I am allowed to be cared for too.

And in the whirlwind of new motherhood, that reminder matters more than we often realise.
